Students Use Grant Money to Help Pomona Community
A College of Business Administration club has received more than $8,000 in grant money to improve the lives of Pomona-area residents and empower small businesses. The grant money encompasses four different projects that must be completed before the end of the school year. It is an ambitious effort for the 18 members of Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) but club President Misael Hernandez says they are up for the challenge.

Home Construction Activity Soars in San Diego County
The Union-Tribune San Diego reports that the number of housing permits in November 2011 soared in San Diego County. While housing construction may be increasing the value and pricing of new homes remains stagnant. Professor Michael Carney, executive director of the Real Estate Research Council of Southern California, says home prices won't reach record highs for another 20 years.

Orange County Home Values Fall $14.7 billion In One Year
The Orange County Register uses data collected on behalf of the Real Estate Research Council to gauge the Orange County real estate market. The newspaper reports that O.C. homes were collectively worth $380.3 billion in the third quarter of 2011, down $14.7 billion from a year ago.

$3 Million NSF Grant Awarded to CBA and a Consortium of Colleges
The College of Business Administration will fast track its plans to create a West Coast cybersecurity league thanks to a $3 million grant from the National Science Foundation awarded to Cal Poly Pomona and a consortium of western colleges.

MBA Alumna Pens Book on Life as a Refugee
On Nov. 8, Carina Hoang will visit Cal Poly Pomona to launch the U.S. debut of her book “Boat People: Personal Stories from the Vietnam Exodus 1975-1996.” Cal Poly Pomona and surrounding communities are invited to hear Hoang speak and sign her book in the Bronco Student Center (Orion Suite) from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. To reserve seating, email Marguerite Endres, mendres@csupomona.edu, by Nov. 4.

Robert Edward Willard, professor emeritus in the College of Business Administration, died Oct. 17 in San Diego. The longtime Cottonwood, Ariz. resident was 80 years old.

Financing a Dream
Accounting students Alexa Koch and Bernice Rose have a knack for math but figuring out how they are going to pay for college won't require any special formulas or calculations. The tuition and fees they will pay for the 2011-12 school year: $0. Koch and Rose are the inaugural recipients of the D. Scott Mercer Scholarship, a fund aimed at high achieving students and military veterans in the College of Business Administration.

Camp Offers Training in Cybersecurity
Faced with an extreme shortage of workers who can protect our network infrastructure, Cal Poly Pomona has announced that it will offer free intensive training to 35 people with a special talent in cybersecurity. These individuals will attend the 2nd Annual California Cyber Challenge Camp July 11-15 at Cal Poly Pomona. Participants will learn at the camp how to detect unwanted network intrusions and get firsthand experience evaluating network security through simulated attacks, among other topics.

Juanita Kurisaki is like many Cal Poly Pomona seniors: she stays up until the early morning hours finishing homework, stresses over her senior project and is counting the days until graduation. Unlike many of the other students on campus, Kurisaki is 77 years old.
