Welcome to the Computer Information Systems Department

Regardless of your age, I’m sure computer and information technology has had some impact on your life.  If you’re from my generation, you’ve seen the invention of ATM machines, cell phones and animated gifs.  If you’re a bit younger, you might live by text messaging and watch YouTube on a regular basis.
 
I marvel at the variety, application and impact of technologies being introduced every day.  This is truly fitting for our department.  Founded in 1968, CIS was the first computing curriculum in a college of business in the United States.  Our founders (that used punch cards and magnetic tapes) prided themselves on having an industry focus, keeping up with rapidly changing technology, creating relevant curriculum and academic excellence.  Today, those values are still apparent.

The CIS department is designated as an academic center of excellence in Information Security.  We also are one of the few programs that offer undergraduate courses in Computer Forensics and Auditing. The department was one of the first in the nation to adopt object oriented programming methodologies into its curriculum and remains a leader in this area.  Telecommunications leadership is evidenced by our hosting the Wireless Telecommunications Symposium and the launch a new telecommunications journal this year.

CIS graduates do extremely well in terms of average starting salary and job placement.   We educate them to be broad and deep technically and to be well versed in many areas of business.  Students have many opportunities to work with industry strength problems as part of service learning, industry sponsored competitions on campus, a careers course and senior project. 

It is exciting to see new technology emerge, integrate and transform.  This is doubly so when our students become the builders of the future.
