Advising Basics

Before you see your advisor...

  • Visit the Cal Poly Pomona website and Bronco Compass to see if you can utlize online resources to answer your questions.
  • Write down the questions you need to ask your advisor or any important points that need to be covered. Make sure you know your ID number.
  • Create an Advising Folder that will contain all the paperwork and information you need to have for a successful meeting with your advisor. Your Advising Folder should include:
    1. An Academic Advising Worksheet (see Student Forms page)
    2. Your current class schedule
    3. Your test scores
    4. Your degree curriculum sheet
    5. Your education plan/roadmap
    6. Extra paper for notes
  • Bring your Advising Folder to every meeting with your advisor! Make sure you prepare for your meeting!
  • Contacting your Advisor

    • International Business majors have advisors assigned to them by last name.
    • Marketing Management majors have advisors assigned to them by career track.
    • Your advisor will be a member of the IBM faculty. Please visit the List of Academic Advisors to find your advisor.
    • MAKE SURE YOU SEE THE CORRECT ADVISOR!

    Advising Tools

    The following two sets of advising tools are designed to assist students and their advisors. Curriculum sheets list the core and support courses required for a particular major and suggests general education classes that will result in the most efficient path to a degree in that major. Road maps are a quarter by quarter plan of the courses required for aparticular major, and also include reminders and major-specific advice.

    IBM Advising

    Need access to an advisor? If you need help with academic counseling, selecting a career choice, or developing a plan of study then you may wish to speak with an academic advisor. The IBM Department has an assigned advisor to assist students with advising needs. Please visit the Faculty Office Hours page to see the list of IBM advisors and their office hours.

      

    College of Business Administration Student Services Center

    The Student Services Center (SSC) in Building 6, Room 220, is designed to help all CBA majors by: (1) providing general academic information, (2) assisting in the completion/processing of various univeristy forms (e.g. general academic petitions, drop petitions); and (3) maintaining a supply of most University petitions and forms. Please visit SSC and find out what services they offer.
